Birthday 2008!
Well, it’s now mid-March, so it’s about time my birthday celebrations came to an end.
The festivities started with a trip to Nice…via London. The only reason I went via London was that it was about the cheapest route, but I kind of regretted it, as I got rather confused when I bought my tickets and I ended up buying them on days I didn’t really mean to. This meant I spent very little time in London, and only about 36 hours in Nice!!
Still, I was in London for long enough to take this picture:

Yep, petrol there is now nearly 1 pound 7 a litre…as opposed to Doha where it’s 0.80 Riyals, or about 11p. Laugh out loud Doha people!
Then it was off to Nice and my trip didn’t start too well. I had a very heavy rucksack on, and when I crouched down to pick something up, I became unbalanced and fell over backwards. This wouldn’t have been so bad if (a) there hadn’t been a million people watching, and (b) I hadn’t been wearing a skirt. The place turned into a circus, even a coach driver leaned out of his cab pointing and laughing. Welcome to Nice!
Still, I was there just long enough to see Inga for a glass of wine...

...before I had to return to Doha, with 2 friends of mine.
I met them at Heathrow, with my suitcase, snowboard and dartboard, as you do...
The dartboard was my birthday present from my sister:

No, I can’t play darts to save my life.
The 3 of us had a brilliant time here, although we seemed to spend most of our time in the damn Irish bar at the Sheraton. We found a new game, called obscure Dilster from all photos. The first time it happened, it was an accident:

But I now have hundreds of these:

There was also a fun new game of make Hoskins drinks Cosmopolitans...if only I could remember why...

One of the few constructive things we did, was go quad-biking on the dunes:

Then the obligatory trip to the post office for a bit of stamp making before they headed off home.

Now it's only 1 week till some more friends arrive and these ones are more adventurous. This is a quote from a recent email:
"Over the last few weeks i have been giving some thought as to what we could do and have come up with a few ideas...:
- beach / pool (need some sun desperately)
- camel ride in the desert
- are day trips possible across the gulf (doesn't look too far on a map...)"
Amy, I don't think I'll be joining you on your sailing trip to Iran, but I'll happily wave you off from the corniche.
